Music Technology & Composition I

Prerequisite: None ½ credit

H1

This course introduces students to basic computer sequencing using the keyboard synthesizer interfaced with a powerful

computer and state-of-the-art music production software. Musical elements are limited to “rhythm section” instruments (drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, and percussion). At the end of the semester, the student will be able to produce convincing, professional sounding rhythm tracks in a variety of contemporary styles. Music reading will cover treble clef pitches and rhythms including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, dotted quarter notes, and eighth notes. Music Theory will include major scale formation and major and minor triads.

Music Technology & Composition II

Prerequisite: Music Tech & Comp I, or approval from instructor.

½ credit

H1

The instrumental palette will be expanded to include the use of newly created sounds designed by the student using basic sine, square, triangle, and saw waves as a foundation. Various types of Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) data will be

analyzed systematically. Manipulation of audio information will be introduced as a means of designing original content out of “found samples”. The concept of creating music mix using software (Equalization, leveling, panning, and compression) will be introduced. The student will be able to create music using a wide variety of sounds and be able to extensively edit the

sequenced MIDI data as well as audio clips. Composition using loop technology will also be added to the student’s arsenal.

Music Theory will include minor scale formation, seventh chords, and diatonic progressions in major and minor keys

Music Theory

Prerequisite: None

The music theory class is open to all students in grades 9-12 who would like to develop an understanding of how music is created and to build and strengthen music literacy skills such as reading and writing music. This course is perfect for the piano or guitar student (particularly if self taught) as well as band, orchestra, and choir students who want to strengthen their applied theory skills. Topics to be studied include music reading fundamentals, scales, intervals, chords, chord progressions, melody, harmony, part writing, and form and composition.  You will use all of this knowledge to understand how music works, and get to create some yourself using the skills that you’ve learned.  A fun and practical class for any musician!  Class is held in the music computer lab.

AP Music Theory

Prerequisite: Current/prior enrollment in an RHS music performing ensemble or demonstration of ability on an instrument or voice. Being able to read notated music is essential.

1 credit

H2

The RHS AP Music Theory course is a thorough exploration of the music essentials of melody, harmony, rhythm, counterpoint, history, style, structure, and form. Students will also aim to gain mastery of aural skills and cognitive concepts to a degree that is commensurate with a first and second-year collegiate music theory course. In addition to learning techniques and materials which pertain to writing and reading music, students will develop their listening, self-singing, and music analysis skills. All students enrolled are expected to take the AP Music Theory examination. Enrollment in this course will ultimately offer those students interested in continuing with music studies at the collegiate level an opportunity to develop a strong understanding of the required essentials of music theory and composition.
